Welcome Carpet Solutions of Knoxville

November 23rd, 2008

On October 1st we merged with another company here in Knoxville called Carpet Solutions. That company formally owned by Johnny Davis was very similar to ours as far as customer service, cleaning systems and business values. Carpet Solutions was a 1 van operation doing 60% commercial and 40% residential business. It was a perfect fit. Johnny Davis has left to pursue his passion being a personal trainer and we wish him the best.

The merger gives our company more flexibility to provide better service for our customers. With 4 vans that have truck mounted steam cleaning units and 1 low moisture commercial cleaning van we are ready to handle any situation.

We look forward to serving all of Carpet Solutions customers and welcome them to our business.

Have a great holiday,

David Gargan

Eco Clean Carpet Solutions

How to find a great carpet cleaning company.

November 8th, 2008

From the desk of David Gargan,

The other day a thought occurred to me. I don’t have a single customer who hasn’t had disappointing encounters with carpet cleaners. Yet, few understand the reason: First, most people shop price. Therefore, most cleaners sell price. The question is, how can one charge less and afford more? The cleaner who cuts his charges has to cut certain aspects of his service to compensate, such as time on the job and the quality of the cleaning agent and reagents he uses. The cleaner who charges less can’t afford high-performance equipment, because, out of his charges must come his business expenses plus his livelihood. Still, each of these service ingredients will impact the quality of the work. If quality isn’t there, disappointment is sure to follow. But, disappointment is the least of the customer’s problems:

Indoor.. environmental problems cause more widespread health problems

than all the outdoor environmental problems put together.

James M. Seltzer, MD

Journal of HealthCare Design

It could be argued-with considerable logic-that carpet cleaning is but a form of preventive medicine. Carpet cleaning is as relevant to health as anything a doctor does. And, when the health of one’s entire family is at risk, it’s not wise to call a quack.

Healthful carpet cleaning is necessarily dependent upon. . .

1) An efficient cleaning method, combined with

2) Proper cleaning procedures

3) Quality, high performance equipment

4) Efficient, rinseable cleaning agents and reagents

5) Professional knowledge and

6) Plenty of caring about achieving quality cleaning results

No amount of knowledge or caring can make a junk machine clean better. The very best in cleaning equipment can perform no better than the professional ability of the man using it. And, regardless of knowledge, regardless of equipment, the work will be no better than the service specialist cares to achieve. All these factors must be operative for optimum cleaning results to be inherent in the finished product. And, that’s my goal each time. . . every time you call for service. Still, know that I am here to serve you any way I can. Never be reluctant to call when I can help.

Best regards,

Carpet Cleaning - Not Just For Looks

October 5th, 2008

Carpet cleaning can make a big difference in the health of the indoor environment. Many think about cleaning only for the appearance or maintenance sake of the carpet, knowing that keeping the carpet clean will keep it looking better and lasting longer. Following the manufacturers’ recommended annual professional cleanings will also prevent the buildup of unhealthy filtered contaminates.  Carpet purifies the air: Carpet plays a vital, positive role in indoor air quality. It acts as an environmental filter, trapping and holding impurities from the air we breathe. Carpet and other household textiles will prevent settled dust, pollens and other contaminates from re-circulating in the air. Studies have shown that a carpeted floor can trap up to 100 times more cat allergen than a polished floor. Carpet cleans feet: Carpet does a wonderful job of drying and cleaning the bottom of shoes and pets’ feet. Walking across an entire house of hard surface floors will not clean the bottom of shoes, but as soon as you step onto carpet the soiling will transfer. Where have your shoes been lately? People rarely  allow shoes to touch their upholstered furniture for fear of transferring soil, but show little concern for those same shoes walking on the carpet. Carpets have been improved dramatically over the years to hide the everyday soil buildup, but don’t let carpet’s hiding ability fool you.  The importance of cleaning: According to Michael Berry, PhD,, former Deputy Director of the EPA Environmental Criteria and Assessment Office, the single leading cause of poor indoor air quality is soil buildup. Carpet and upholstery must be cleaned to remove trapped contaminants before they overflow and are released into the indoor re-circulated air systems. More frequent professional cleaning is recommended for homes with pets, small children and allergy sensitive people: Pets, children and smokers tend to create a greater amount of carpet contamination. Carpet in rooms where small children play (in close contact with carpet) requires greater diligence in maintenance cleaning. Allergy sensitive people, especially with dust mite sensitivities also benefit from more frequent cleaning. Michael Berry, PhD, and the EPA recommend for situations with pets, small children or allergy sensitive people that the carpet be professionally cleaned as frequently as every 3-6 months for health reasons.  Carpet not only adds beauty and comfort to a home, but can also help improve indoor air quality. Remember, for carpet to perform at it’s best, it must be kept clean.

Carpet & filtration soiling

August 13th, 2008

Filtration Soiling is dark staining near baseboards, air registers, under doorways and in other areas where moving air may filter throughout rug fibers. Builders and new home warranty groups are finding that streaking caused by carbon soot or nicotine often cannot be removed.

Where Does It Happen?
Soot deposits are usually seen in more recently built homes, but it has also been seen in older homes. There have even been cases of staining in newly built, unoccupied residences. Most filtration soiling has been reported in metropolitan areas

What Causes filtration soiling ?
Dust or dirt causes most marks on carpets, and will wash out quite easily. Filtration Soiling is caused by carbon soot or nicotine and can come from inside or outside the house and often permanently marks the carpet. Two factors cause filtration soiling: a source of carbon soot plus Air movement causing carbon particles to move through the carpet.

Carbon Soot Sources
Carbon or tobacco smoke is particulate matter - it is made up of very small particles.
Research shows that houses near exhaust from vehicles, trains or airplanes can be affected by carbon soot stains. Leaky furnaces, gas ranges, fireplaces, and cigarette smoke can also cause carbon soot stains.

However, recent studies show that a common cause of carbon soot stains is the use of candles in the house. Some candles - particularly those made of low-quality paraffin wax, those using oils for scent produce more soot than others. Wick length and the amount of oxygen a candle gets can also cause overproduction of carbon soot.
For example:
* Candles inside jars produce more soot because less oxygen reaches the wick
* Incorrectly designed candles will burn the wax too quickly, leaving more of the wick exposed
* Oversized wicks cause the flame to burn too high
* Any draft passing over the flame will cause the candle to smoke.
To find out if a candle produces carbon soot, burn it on top of a turned-on television. After several hours, wipe the screen with a clean, white cloth or tissue. If there is soot on the cloth, switch to another make of candle. Several candle manufacturers print warning labels about carbon soot on their packages.

Air Movement
Carpets act as filters for airborne particles. For example, if a bedroom door is usually kept closed, positive pressure caused by the supply register blowing air into the room will force the air underneath the door. As the air moves underneath the door, the carbon fibers trap the particles. Over time, the carpeting begins to darken. Another cause is a furnace intake vent that is sized for the furnace but is not large enough to replace air being exhausted from the clothes dryer or the bathroom. Filtration soiling can become quite noticeable, especially in light-colored carpeting. It can also be seen on drapes, furniture and around light switches, on brass door hinges and even inside your furniture.

How To Avoid the Problem
Prevention is the best way to reduce or avoid carpet streaking.
* Avoid light colored carpet
* Keep soot sources out of the house-choose your candles wisely
* Prevent pollutants from entering the house
* Prevent air from passing through the carpet. You can find out where this occurs by watching the smoke from a stick of incense held near the baseboards.
Keeping soot from entering your house requires a fairly complicated ventilation system. Preventing air from moving in your carpet requires some thought, good design and quality construction.
Air movement in a house requires a pressure difference & an opening like along the floor-wall junction or stairs, near registers or where the sub-floor panels join. Air cannot pass through a carpet if the floor underneath is sealed between the floor & wall.
A tightly built house, with few or no air leaks, will not have air leaking into the house through exterior walls. But rooms with supply ducts and no returns could have a problem if the doors are kept closed. Unsealed duct runs, or return air ducts that use the floor joists, are apt to cause pressure differences.

In a New Home Or After Renovation.
There are several ways to reduce the risk of filtration soiling. Most do cost more, but some will actually save money by improving energy efficiency. Others can make your house healthier by reducing dust.

Recommended System
To avoid carpet staining, remember that a house with a very tight envelope will not have wall leaks that drive the dust through the edge of carpet. This type of house must also have a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) to provide all the house’s ventilation. Air entering the HRV can be passed through a high efficiency filter. This treats almost all the air coming into the house and keeps airborne particles out. It is still good practice to ensure that all forced air ducting has well-sealed metal ducts and a balance of supply and return air.
Other Solutions
* Caulk or seal all baseboards before applying trim and installing carpeting
* Use a high efficiency filter on the furnace or an electrostatic precipitator to reduce staining at the registers and improve air quality
* Use area rugs instead of wall-to- wall carpets
* Have your home and stove, furnace and fireplace performance tested to ensure they meet all recommendations and specifications.
If you have this problem now…
Filtration soiling may not be caused by carbon soot. Dirt and dust stains are usually gray.
To clean the stains use a Professional carpet cleaning service.
Unfortunately, black carbon soot stains are often permanent. For streaking along the baseboards, cut off the stained edges, put plastic sheeting over the floor-wall joint (or caulk) to stop air movement, and re-stretch the carpet to fit.
Is There a Health Risk?
Concentrations of particles that cause streaking are likely to be quite low. It is not yet clear if low concentrations of carbon soot particles inside a house are a health threat.

I hope this information was helpfull. Feel free to contact me with any carpet concerns or questions.

Carpet Cleaning and Your Health

June 22nd, 2008

Indoor Health Threats-Causes & Controls Carpet is an important health function in preventing the spread of contaminants

throughout your home. Of course, it restricts by collecting pollutants, just as your air conditioning filter. And, just as your air conditioning filter should be changed monthly, carpeting should be cleaned at regular intervals for health reasons-especially in high traffic areas.

Unfortunately, many people view carpet cleaning as a nicety, not a necessity. Even more unfortunate, children, having under-developed immune systems, are the first to suffer the consequences. They live closer to the floor. Still, continuous exposure to contaminants, day after day, wears down the resistance of all, regardless of age.

Consider that we spend 85% to 90% of our time indoors. Day after day, we are continually exposed to many organic, inorganic, and biological pollutants that steadily increase in quantity when we don’t keep our indoor surfaces clean. Regular periodic maintenance is necessary.

Dr. Michael Berry, a deputy director in the EP A, commented at a Denver symposium that the average family spends less than ½ of 1 % of their income on cleaning. This fact certainly explains why more and more people are getting sick, . . . why health care is a multibillion dollar industry, doesn’t it? Surly, the preservation of a healthy home environment is worth more than that.

Never forget that I’m here to serve you. My customers often call just for advice on removing spots, and I don’t mind a bit. Call when I can help in any way.

Carpet cleaning for pet stain & odor

January 31st, 2008

Please note that when cleaning urine spots, there is a difference between cleaning the urine soiling and treating for odor. Cleaning existing urine spots MAY NOT remove any associated odor. In fact, could INCREASE the odor in the air space for a temporary period of time.

Pet urine can cause permanent damage to your floors and fabrics. It can also create an unhealthy indoor environment. When urine is first deposited onto a floor or fabric, it is in an almost “neutral” state which means it is easier to remove when it is fresh. Once it dries, it turns “alkaline” and becomes more difficult to remove. If left for days or weeks, depending on the fabric or floor type, it will permanently change the dye structure, therefore causing permanent staining. Even if the soluble deposits are removed, the damage to the dye structure may already be done.

**This means that no one can guarantee complete removal of all urine spots. Please consult with your technician if you have questionable urine spots on your carpet.

To prevent permanent staining in the future, clean urine spots immediately by blotting with a white terry cloth towel or plain white paper towels until no moisture is transferred. To clean the spot, mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and massage (don’t rub) into the spot with a white terry cloth. Once you have “flushed” as much of the urine out as possible, blot with dry cloths until dry to the touch. *If you have a small extraction machine, flush with fresh water until spot is removed. *DO NOT USE OVER THE COUNTER, GENERAL SPOTTERS OR EXTRACTION DETERGENT. IF YOU DO NOT USE THIS FORMULA, ASK US ABOUT SPECIAL PET SPOTTERS.
